Despite his roguish beard and hearty outerwear, the character on the cover of Songs from the Abattoir is not Grumpy Bear. Grumpy Bear is in fact an adventurous duo from somewhere in the wilds of rural Arizona who, while occasionally bearded and generally hearty, possess their own visages. The songs on this disc spring from deep wells of musical love and audible hiss. Songs from the Abattoir is the latest formal surfacing of Grumpy Bear, a fertile, bemusing blend of Americana, lo fi, new wave, and sentimental pop. Tyler Blake and Lattney B., they who are Grumpy Bear, have neither the time nor the interest for genre singularity. Drum machines lay next to the jagged guitars of indie rock classicism, psychedelic pop sprawls beneath the probing noises of the abstract. The only common threads are intimacy, ambition and melodic chops.  Yes, melodic chops.

“It’s beautiful and honest, so I highly suggest that you give it a shot.” - You Ain’t No Picasso

“It’s lofi sure but it is also genre boundary and barrier jumping like hell. Found sounds compete with tinkling keys, strummed acoustic guitars, banjo and hiss, lots of hiss.” – songs:illinois
