The Lovely Sparrows are one of Austin, TX’s finest bands and best kept secrets. Over the past several years, the Lovely Sparrows have forged an impressive body of work from founder Shawn Jones’ sophisticated pop and dark folk leanings. With Tall Cedars of Lebanon, the band returns after a long hiatus with five beautifully crafted songs that carry small threads of surprise and dissonance through statements of hope, love and resignation. The Lovely Sparrows’ early Take Your Hats Off You Godless Bastards 7″ is a blast of laconic fuzz pop and electric guitar revelry. Jones began to really find his voice with 2006’s Pulling up Floors, Pouring on (New) Paint EP, which was released to small-scale acclaim on upstart label Abandoned Love Records. The EP received positive reviews from the likes of Harp and Paste as well as a host of bloggers and radio stations such as KUT, KVRX, and KSZU. The band showcased at SXSW then embarked on a few short tours of the East Coast and Midwest, recording a Daytrotter session and picking up discerning fans along the way.Momentum led Jones to pen his most accomplished and ambitious songs to date which were meticulously fleshed-out and captured on the band’s debut LP, Bury the Cynics. Released in 2008 by Abandoned Love Records, Bury the Cynics marries lyrical pop sensibilities with Jones’ formal musical composition and performance training. In support of Bury the Cynicsthe Lovely Sparrows played shows as far afield as Seattle and Brooklyn as well as festivals like Pop Montreal and SXSW. An animated video for “Year of the Dog” racked up tens of thousands of views on YouTube and Vimeo. The Lovely Sparrows are a living, pulsing amoeba of a band, deftly able to stage a show with as few as one and as many as seven members. The close of 2011 finds the band reinvigorated, productive and inspired.
